Description
The talk we presented "Triangulating social meaning: The interplay of self-report, perception, and production data in understanding yeah-no in Australian English" explored how individuals' regional backgrounds influence their perceptions of the discourse marker yeah-no. Using a three-part combinatory methods design, the study examined self-reports, social judgements, and naturalistic speech data from 56 participants with rural and urban backgrounds. Findings revealed that rural participants were more likely to associate yeah-no with rural speakers, while urban participants did the opposite. Additionally, individuals who self-reported higher use of yeah-no tended to perceive it as a rural feature. These results suggest that judgements of social meaning are contingent upon an individual's positioning to a linguistic variable, underlining the significant role of regional variation in the social interpretation of yeah-no.
