This cultural event, centred on a Gadigal Welcome Ceremony, including a smoking ceremony and boomerang activities, provided a platform for creative engagement and participatory knowledge exchange. By generating artefacts and research insights under Indigenous guidance, the event facilitated encounters with practices of caring for Country, foregrounding Indigenous epistemologies and methodologies. These experiences were considered through theoretical frameworks addressing displacement, migration, and the negotiation of belonging, highlighting how Indigenous cultural protocols can support new refugees and displaced communities in cultivating connection to place and community. Participants’ generous sharing of cultural knowledges fostered relational understandings of Country and belonging, illustrating the potential for Indigenous-led engagement to inform approaches to inclusion, social cohesion, and cross-cultural understanding in contemporary Australia.
