Education in the Anthropocene: Understanding the future through international collaboration Colloquium between Western Sydney University, Australia and Shiraz University, Iran.

Activity: Talk/PresentationPresentation

Description

Education and its research prepare students for the future. However, there is little attention or understanding of how this works given, for example, the known effects of the planetary boundaries on future human society. This symposium foregrounds the concept of the Anthropocene as being pivotal to understanding how human society will change and the role that education plays in these transformations. The Anthropocene describes the telluric force that humanity has become given its widespread and interconnected technological developments, international lines of communication and trade, and scientific advances to fight disease, hunger, and deprivation. The Anthropocene does not suggest that scientific advances are wrong, or can be reversed, but that they describe drives that can also have negative environmental impacts, such as the domination of nature/biodiversity/natural flourishing. Hence, this international colloquium will interrogate educational practice and research to unearth the throughlines from human inquiry and progress to enhanced natural functioning and integration with the biosphere.
