Kathernine (Team Leader, NSW TAFE) and Donna (Head Teacher, NSW TAFE) gave an informative talk about the English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) programs offered at the 15 TAFE colleges in Western Sydney. They also covered ESOL employment information in the NSW TAFE Colleges.The ESL programs include Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP), Skills for Education & Employment (SEE), General English, English for further study, Certificate IV English for academic purposes (EAP), and English as an additional language (EAL) at five different levels. TAFENSW-accredited ESOL courses include the following.
• Statement of Attainment in Beginner English
• Cert I in Fundamental English for speakers of other languages
• Cert II in Basic English for speakers of other languages
• Cert II in Routine English for speakers of other languages
• Cert III in English for further studies
• Cert III in Advanced English for further studies
• Cert IV in English for academic purposes
They also provided useful information about the qualifications needed for TESOL employment at TAFE.
• A recognised* Bachelor degree (AQF 7) in education, with a TESOL major OR
• A recognised* Bachelor degree (AQF 7) + a postgraduate qualification (AQF 8 or higher) in TESOL OR
• A recognised* Graduate Diploma or higher + a postgraduate qualification (AQF 8 or higher) in TESOL
* From an accredited Australian Higher Education Institution, or a qualification recognised as equivalent to the stated AQF level or higher by the Australian Government Country Education Profiles (CEPs) tool.
The WSU TESOL students, including those specialised in the International English major in an undergraduate course, were excited about their talk, particularly the updated employment information. All present had a few group photos with big smiles and thumbs up.
TAFE Colleges NSW in Western Sydney have provided WSU TESOL Internship (LANG7033 currently offered at the School of Humanities and Communication Arts) with placements and enabled students to gain work-integrated learning experience, eventually leading to employment.
