Description

This research will assess the application of Procedural Justice Policing in the Criminal Justice System (CJS), particularly in the interactions between the police and women victims of Sexual Violence (SV) during reporting and investigation of the crimes. The Procedural Justice Framework will be applied to conduct qualitative research using interviews, semi-structured questionnaires, observation and focus group discussions with 50 survivors of sexual violence in Kenya; 40 police investigators and 25 prosecutors as actors in the CJS drawn from both Kenya and Australia. Extant Procedural justice studies have mainly focused on procedural justice policing in general crimes, with very few researches exploring the application on sexual violence cases against women. It is expected that the research will contribute to the existing knowledge in police procedural justice globally, the limited research in Sub-Saharan Africa, the scarce procedural justice studies in Kenya as it relates to women survivors of sexual violence. The results will have policy implications on enhancing access to justice and will provide a worthy perspective on holistic response to sexual violence reports.
