Sydney Opera House Opera Theatre Shakespeare Performs Solo Sung Welcome to Country

Activity: Engagement and ConsultancyNot-for-profit engagement

Description

Gadigal Saltwater woman, Dr Madison Shakespeare, welcomed special guests and invitees to Gadigal Country at the Sydney Opera House Opera Theatre with a solo-sung Welcome to Country, honouring Gadigal custodianship and connection to Sea Country and Land. Her Welcome grounded Lesbians in the House in respect for Country, Ancestors, and living Culture, creating a culturally safe opening for community celebration and centring Gadigal voices and sovereignty within a major cultural institution. The performance framed a landmark community gathering, marking twenty years since 2,000 lesbians came together at the Opera House in 2000 for a night of music, dance, and connection. Returning ‘in the house’ on 10 July, the concert culminated a weekend of festivities, celebrating continuity, visibility, and community on Gadigal Country.
