Description
Professor Claudio Díaz (Ph.D.) works in the Faculty of Education at the University of Concepción in Chile. Currently on his sabbatical leave and visiting Western Sydney University, Prof. Díaz specialises in TESOL teacher education, especially in second language assessment and testing. In his presentation, Prof. Díaz introduced general information about Chilean educational system (at primary, secondary and post-secondary levels), focusing on the TESOL teacher education programme in the Faculty of Education. The University of Concepción offers a 5-year undergraduate TESOL teacher training program. A graduate can work in public, voucher and private schools. Besides, it offers a 2-year Master of TESOL program that provides the postgraduates with opportunities to teach in universities, colleges and schools.
Prof. Díaz also explained in detail the important role of assessments, particularly formative assessment, in student learning, involving who can assess, what to assess and how to assess. The assessment results are valuable feedback for the teacher to reflect on the need to adjust the teaching methods, techniques, and modes to meet student learning needs. Many students present showed much interest in the presentation and actively asked questions about the TESOL teacher professional development and employment. Prof. Díaz enthusiastically interacted with them and responded to all questions.
