Australian scientists investigating the reasons animals living underground all tend to look the same - pale and blind - were surprised to find functional genes for vision in an eyeless water beetle that lives in total darkness.  Dr Simon Tierney is a Postdoctoral Researcher with the University of Adelaide who headed up the research program.
