In many cultures, being bilingual or multilingual is commonplace. In Australia, while some schools are implementing language lessons and bilingual programs, this is not as common in early childhood educational settings.

But some childcare centres are bucking the trend and embedding additional languages into their everyday programming. Life Matters spends time at a facility catering to families who are recent migrants and speaks with staff at a centre on Gumbaynggirr country in Coffs Harbour, which cares for First Nations children.
