In Australia the diversity of languages spoken including Indigenous languages is characteristic of our multicultural and multilingual society. There is long standing and well established research that documents the intellectual, linguistic, cultural, social, familial and economic benefits of childhood bilingualism and learning an additional language. Community language schools play a vital role in the retention and development of children’s home/community languages. Voices of Latin America in Australia: Showcasing Best Teaching Practices in Spanish Community Language Schools in Sydney aims to promote the learning of Spanish in various learning experiences that engage children to use Spanish for communicative purposes. It takes viewers into the classrooms of three Spanish community language schools who share aspects of their ongoing program as models for the teaching of languages to school aged children in our communities. The content and focus of this DVD is applicable and transferable to all community languages teaching and learning because it is drawn from contemporary approaches to languages teaching, namely: communicative language teaching. It explores the different ways the teachers across these three schools foster children’s engagement with learning Spanish through parent and community involvement, pedagogy and cultural identity.
