    Subject summary:
    This unit introduces students to field of TESOL and to some of the social and academic contexts which influence it - adult education, linguistics, cultural and migration factors, curriculum studies. It provides students with some insight into the key issues in these fields which impact on the teaching and learning of English as a second or other language.

    Subject learning outcomes:
    Students will be able to:
    • Identify the influences of various braches of linguistics in English language teaching and learning;
    • apply knowledge of contemporary approaches to adult education to the field of adult language teaching and learning;
    • understand and critique policies and programs associated with migration in Australia;
    • critique issues associated with the politics of English and English language teaching in the current global and local contexts;
    • evaluate pedagogical and linguistic influences on approaches to English language teaching and learning.
