Doctor Adam Daniel

Dr Adam Daniel is a filmmaker, media scholar and Lecturer in Communication/Creative Production and Performance whose research sits at the intersection of film and media studies, spectatorship, and genre theory. He has published widely on film, television and popular culture, and is the author of Affective Intensities and Evolving Horror Forms: From Found Footage to Virtual Reality (Edinburgh University Press), which explores how horror cinema has developed across formats and technologies. His work frequently engages with affect, narrative structures, temporal dynamics, and genre evolution, as evidenced in his scholarly writing on filmmakers like David Lynch, Steven Spielberg and Terrence Malick. He has an interest in how audiences engage with media, particularly within horror, narrative experimentation and hybrid media forms. In addition to academic writing, Daniel has produced short films that integrate his scholarly inquiry into affect, narrative and genre with creative research practice. He wrote and directed the short films The Replica and A Moment, and produced the short films Mud Crab, Agoge, Portals and Flow. Mud Crab was nominated for an AACTA Award for Best Australian Short Film in 2023.
