Dr Armin Alimardani is a Senior Lecturer in Law and Emerging Technologies and Program Lead for AI and Legal Technologies at the School of Law, Western Sydney University. Working at the intersection of law, technology, science and philosophy, his research examines how emerging technologies, from AI and brain–computer interfaces to neuroscience and genetics, are reshaping society and the law. He is internationally recognised for his empirical research on the impact of AI on education and the legal profession, and he is a passionate advocate for policies that discourage AI from displacing humans.

Armin is Director of the Law & Intelligent Systems Lab, an interdisciplinary hub exploring how intelligent systems are reshaping law and society, and how the law should respond. He also brings a strong commitment to innovation in academia and public engagement: he directs the Legal Innovation Lab at Western Sydney University, where students and academics build AI tools for legal education and research, and he collaborates with colleagues at UNSW Sydney to prototype AI-powered educational tools (safetofailai.streamlit.app).

In 2024, Armin further expanded his scholarly reach by serving as a consultant on OpenAI projects. He previously sat on the University of Wollongong AI Expert Group, which advises the University on AI policy in line with current research and ethical standards. A dedicated translator of academic research into plain English, he regularly appears as a law and technology commentator on ABC Radio, 9NEWS, WIN TV and The New Daily. He also hosts the podcast Future Ready Lawyer: AI and the Evolution of Legal Practice, which offers practical, hype-free insights for anyone who teaches, studies or practises law.

Earlier in his career, Armin developed ethics and AI teaching materials for the policy sector with the Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation at UTS (funded by DFAT), and contributed to the Australian Neurolaw Database Project (neurolaw.edu.au), which archives and analyses Australian court cases involving neuroscience. A committed educator, he received the 2021 University of Wollongong Faculty of Business and Law Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning. He has created two research-led elective subjects, Legal Entrepreneurship and Artificial Intelligence and the Law, and developed Law and Technology, which from 2027 will be taught as a core subject for the first time in an Australian law school.
