I welcome students who are interested in MRes or doctoral supervision in the study of language, culture, and society. I focus on how humans interact with objects, as well as topics like linguistic anthropology, semiotics, sociolinguistics, digital media, and linguistic landscapes.
Research activity per year
I hold a PhD in Linguistic Anthropology, specialising in the intricate relationships between language, culture, and social interaction across diverse settings, including markets, corner shops, and digital platforms. My research integrates Mediated Discourse Analysis (MDA) and Nexus Analysis to explore how individuals and communities negotiate identities, accomplish actions, and construct meaning in both physical and virtual environments.
A key dimension of my work examines the significance of objects and material culture in mediating actions, alongside the transformative role of social media and digital communication in shaping contemporary practices. By analysing the intersections of language, agency, and materiality, I illuminate how cultural norms, power dynamics, and social identities are navigated and redefined in evolving contexts.
My interdisciplinary approach draws from linguistics, semiotics, social theory, ethnography, ethnomethodology, politics, history, and media studies. This has led to significant contributions in high-ranking journals such as Social Semiotics, Multimodal Communication, Journal of Pragmatics, Australian Review of Applied Linguistics, Discourse, Context & Media, and Journal of Linguistic Landscape.
I welcome opportunities to mentor MRes or PhD students interested in linguistic anthropology, sociolinguistics, semiotics, mediated discourse analysis, digital media, and linguistic landscapes, with a particular focus on the interplay between language, culture, and society.
