Biography

Emma Gentle is an art therapist and researcher. She completed her PhD (USyd) on group art-making processes; Master of Art Therapy (WSU); MA in Applied Anthropology, Community and Youth Work (GU); and Diplomas in Psychology and Applied Psychology (BU). Emma primarily uses participatory and arts-based research methods. Emma’s research and practice centres on the capacity of creativity to improve mental health. In her practice, she utilises art processes to: 1) cultivate unencumbered expression of feelings; 2) tell story; 3) increase connection; 4) reduce stigma; and 5) as a creative recovery tool. Emma has lived, studied and worked with varied cultural cohorts in Australia, UK and Mexico. Her arts practice includes sculpture, multimedia, film and photography.
