Biography
Dr Garth Lean is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences at Western Sydney University and a core member of the Translational Health Research Institute. He currently leads the School of Social Sciences’ Southeast Asia portfolio and contributes more broadly to engagement, partnerships, and student recruitment across the School and wider Faculty. He has more than 20 years of experience across higher education, government, industry, and professional organisations.
Garth’s research spans tourism, travel, health, and human experiences and behaviours, with a particular focus on transformative travel, travel health, infection prevention and control, vaccination, aviation and airports, and digital and mobile technologies. He has published widely in these fields, regularly presents at conferences and institutions in Australia and internationally, and is frequently sought for expert media commentary.
Garth currently coordinates Western Sydney University’s tourism, hospitality, and events placement subjects. He is strongly committed to equitable education and graduate career readiness.
