Dr Jayson Lamchek is an interdisciplinary legal scholar examining the advancement of human rights alongside socio-legal transformations as a result of advanced technologies. A core concern in my research is how the right to science can be interpreted, operationalised, and enforced in present-day societies. There are several sub-themes within my research area: (1) Right to Science: I develop the right to science under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the International Convenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) as a comprehensive and balanced framework for governing new technologies, resurfacing benefit-sharing alongside protective and participatory aspects of the right. (2) Benefit-sharing in science: A distinctive feature of my work is linking technological progress to economic redistribution. I analyse universal basic income (UBI) as a possible institutional mechanism to realise the benefit sharing obligation of the right to science. I analyse the connection between data monetisation/extraction, new taxation and payments for data. (3) Technology regulation: I also engage Artificial Intelligence (AI) regulation, particularly risk regulation, from a critical perspective as a human rights lawyer trying to understand empirically how regulators succeed or fail in protecting people from technological harm. (4) Legal and judicial approaches: Finally, I investigate disinformation campaigns to articulate the limits of platform regulation and possible future legal and judicial approaches.
