Personal profile

Biography

I’m a designer, artist, and academic whose three careers span media, fine art, and higher education.

My media career began as a news designer and art director, contributing to over 40 leading Australian publications, including The Sydney Morning HeraldThe AgeThe Bulletin, and Australian Business Magazine, and producing more than 10,000 individual editions.  At Fairfax Media, I led design teams covering landmark global events where I used visual storytelling to bring clarity to complex narratives.  As Art Director at Australian Consolidated Press, I was responsible for the implementation of digital design and production, leading the first national publication to adopt desktop publishing. At Fairfax Media I remained at the forefront of media’s shift from print to digital, overseeing strategic evolution and innovation. My enduring industry connection now informs my teaching, research, and engagement at Western.

Alongside my media career, I’ve developed a national reputation as a fine artist, with 40 solo exhibitions, 350+ group shows across Australia, New Zealand and Japan, and a finalist in major art prizes, including the Sulman, and Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award. My work is in many prominent public collections, including Parliament House, Canberra.  In 2017, I founded the Painted River Project (PRP), a nationally recognised participatory art and science initiative connecting communities with waterway health. PRP integrates science with art to promote environmental stewardship and has run numerous initiatives with hundreds of collaborators and thousands of participants to date.

As an academic, my research spans eco-social design, environmental aesthetics, and the role of creative practice in communicating planetary health.  Through my teaching, I’ve empowered students to engage with real-world challenges via industry collaborations, co-designed curricula, and outward-facing events, fostering dynamic, industry-connected learning environments.
