Personal profile

Biography

I am Senior Lecturer in Secondary Education, having previously served as Postdoctoral Research Fellow in STEM Education (2016-2021). I hold the degrees of Bachelor of Information Technology, Master of Teaching (Secondary), Master of Education, and Doctor of Philosophy (Education) from the University of Newcastle, Australia. My MEd thesis was a groundbreaking exploration of the influence on socioeconomic status on achievement motivation, and my PhD examined the development of young people's career and education aspirations using a latent profile approach. Since joining WSU, my research has combined these interests to explore the motivational and attitudinal profiles of adolescents towards science, technology, and mathematics. My research training has developed skills in both quantitative and qualitative social research methods, including survey and focus group methodologies, and sophisticated techniques for analysis of large datasets.

I have presented my research at national conferences across Australia and at international conferences in Denmark, Germany, Greece, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. I have worked with colleagues to establish a strong publication record in high-quality journals which attract strong citations (h-index 10) and to secure $6.3 million in external funding. A significant proportion of this funding has enabled close collaboration with industry partners across the education and government sectors, with a focus on program evaluation and teacher professional development.

My teaching interests include foundation studies in education, educational psychology, STEM education, and educational research methods. I welcome MRes, MPhil, EdD, and PhD supervision enquiries from candidates whose topics align with my research and teaching interests. I am also available as a thesis examiner and peer reviewer for quality journals.

In terms of governance and service, I currently hold the Level D position of Director of Academic Program, Secondary (2024-), having previously served as Academic Program Advisor (2023). As DAP, I have led the development of the Bachelor of Education (Secondary), a once-in-a-generation new program offering for Western Sydney University, consisting of 29 majors across all secondary key learning areas. I have trained in the accreditation of initial teacher education qualifications by the Australian Institute for Teaching & School Leadership (AITSL) and have chaired accreditation panels for the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).
