Personal profile
Biography
I’m an award-winning educator, higher education leader, and Associate Professor in Public Relations at Western Sydney University, where I also serve as Head of Discipline for Media and Communication. With more than two decades of experience in teaching, research, and academic leadership, I’m guided by a core belief that everyone—regardless of where they were born, their socio-economic background, family ties, gender, or sexuality—deserves equal access to a quality education. Education is, to me, the most powerful tool we have to achieve genuine equality, and the students of Western Sydney deserve nothing less.
As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, I’m passionate about creating inclusive environments where every student feels welcome and valued, and where diverse perspectives enrich our collective understanding. Whether in the classroom, on study tours, or through industry partnerships, I help students connect what they learn to real-world challenges and opportunities.
Ongoing feedback is central to my approach—I believe learning is most powerful when it’s collaborative and reflective. My extensive industry connections allow me to bring current trends and professional insights directly to my students, ensuring they graduate career-ready and confident to contribute meaningfully to the communication field.
I’ve been honoured with multiple teaching and research awards, including five university-level teaching prizes, national and international recognition for my research, and the Communication and Public Relations Australia Educator of the Year award in 2020. My research spans the scholarship of teaching and learning, online brand communities, peer support in breastfeeding, and LGBTQ+ parenting.
Beyond the university, I’ve volunteered with the Australian Breastfeeding Association since 2001, serving in leadership, counselling. and community education roles that align with my lifelong commitment to equity, advocacy, and inclusion.
