Prof Richard Yang is the Interim Dean, School of Engineering, Director, Centre for Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Head of Discipline, Mechanical and Mechtronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, Western Sydney University.

Richard was awarded PhD Mechanical Engineering in 2002 from the University of Hong Kong (HKU), China and then had 5-year Postdoc Research Fellow experience in KAIST, South Korea, USyd and Deakin, Australia. After that, he became a lecturer in 2007 and a senior lecturer in 2008 at Deakin. In 2012, he joined WSU as Associate Professor Mechanical Engineering & Smart Structure and was promoted to Professor in 2017. 

Richard is an internationally recognised research leader and scholar in the fields of research – Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, etc., with great research strength and expertise in Advanced Engineering Materials, Advanced Manufacturing, Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing, Digital Twin, Industry 4.0, Mechanical Design, Engineering Numerical Methods, Multiscale Modelling Techniques, Material Design, Testing and Characterisation, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), Machine Condition Monitoring (MCM), Smart Structures, Metal Forming, Metal Surface Treatment, etc. He has established wide connections with local manufacturing industries. 

As for research grants, Richard got awarded 13 Category-1 competitive grants since 2008, including 1 ARC Training Centre (WSU Research Manager and CI), 3 ARC DP grants on advanced composite materials (1 Leading CI, two CI), 1 ARC Linkage grant on composites (Leading CI), 2 ARC Linkage grants in roll forming of metal sheets (CI), and 6 ARC LIEF grants (WSU Research Manager and CI), 2 CSIRO/NSF grants on 3D printing of recycled thermal plastics and composites (Leading CI) as well as 1 AMCRC and 25 Catogory-2 & 3 external grants with a total amount more than $20m. In scientific publication, he has published 348 scientific publications, including 4 edited books, 9 book chapters, 10 special issues, 187 refereed journals, and 137 conference papers in his fields of research. 

As for external service, Richard is serving as assessor for ARC, Editor-in-Chief, associate editor, guest editor, editorial board member, conference chair, conference committee member, reviewers of international journals and conferences, examiner for Master and PhD theses, etc.
