Biography
Dr Sperandei has a BSc in Statistics with more than 20 years of practice in research data analysis, demonstrated by a series of published works using different statistical approaches including marginal structural models, trajectory analysis, mediation effect models, interrupted time-series, spatial analysis, mixed logistic and survival models, and others. His research and consultancy work include data from populations as varied as people living with HIV, drug users, transgender women, very low-income people, and men who have sex with men and he already acted in many country-wide researches in Brazil, Latin America, and Mozambique. He also has experience in sampling methods designed for hard-to-reach populations, including simulation methods of connected populations. Dr Sperandei’s expertise in data science was acknowledged by the Australian government with a distinguished talent visa through the Global Talent program.
Dr Sandro has a track record of 38 papers published or accepted to publication in the last five years (65 in total), 32 of those in highly ranked journals (Q1/Q2), with more than 2,000 citations since 2019. Among those, it can be highlighted the paper "Efficacy of a short message service brief contact intervention (SMS-SOS) in reducing repetition of hospital-treated self-harm: randomised controlled trial", recent published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, which brings the results of the pilot study that originated the current research proposal and where Dr Sperandei led the statistical analysis.
Dr Sandro current interest in research is focused on self-harm and suicide prevention, mental health, and transgender women. He works with large linked administrative databases from the NSW government (APDC, EDDC, Community Activities, among others) and has a long-time collaboration with the Western Sydney Local Health District. Dr Sandro is a Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology and the Deputy HDR Director of the Translational Health Research Institute and provides statistical support for researchers and students of the School of Medicine of the Western Sydney University. Internationally, Dr Sperandei has a strong partnership with researchers from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation and Santa Casa de São Paulo, both in Brazil.
Since 2019, Dr Sperandei has attracted over three million dollars in research grants and partnerships from international agencies (Botnar Foundation and Pan-American Health Organisation) and local partners (Western Sydney LHD, Parramatta Mission, Sydney LHD).
