Personal profile
Biography
I have enjoyed my academic tenure for over 30 years and in the process gained a Ph.D. in Emergency Nurse Triage Education. Many students have discussed with me the value that they place on my strong commitment to maintaining clinical currency and research expertise, especially in Emergency Nursing. I believe that this is a particularly important aspect that enriches and validates my research and acknowledges the fact that my students work in challenging dynamic health environments. In addition to that nursing practices continue to evolve and change under the guidance of Evidence Based Practice.
I developed broad clinical expertise in emergency nursing over the previous 30+ years. My PhD incorporated a mixed method design and focused on the development and evaluation of a triage education program. More recently through HDR supervision, I have developed an interest in acute sepsis management from a nursing perspective.
I am also active in Learning & Teaching scholarship, working in and leading school-based research teams evaluating a co-design methodology and rapid appraisal framework. International students’ will be co-designers to explore their academic literacy needs. In addition, pre-registration nursing students will be co-designers in developing assessment case studies, to minimise artificial intelligence use.
I have a very open and engaging teaching style. I promote openness by being willing and ready to receive student impressions or ideas on the subject content that we are discussing. Students are engaged in their learning by being encouraged to participate in a way that is active and energetic so that they are involved, interested and engaged . I generally find that this assists my students to develop self-confidence and motivation when they pursue their HDR studies.
I have been privileged as a primary supervisor to mentor many inspiring Bachelor of Nursing (Hons), Master of Research (MRes) and PhD students to the completion of their thesis. In the process gained valuable recent expertise in conducting systematic reviews, qualitative research, and my particular interest in mixed method study designs.
