Dr. Zein Amro holds a PhD in Biomedicine awarded from the University of Adelaide within the field of Neuroscience. The primary focus of his thesis was investigating the roles of human aquaporin water channels in Tauopathies, particularly, Alzheimer’s Disease. Major discoveries from his PhD included the discovery of two novel aquaporin channels in the human brain with potential protective roles in oxidative stress, a common aetiology of Alzheimer’s Disease. Zein’s research interests are centred around oxidative stress in neurodegenerative disorders, mental health disorders, and cancer.
Dr. Amro also has international research experience in Scleroderma and lung fibrosis research at McGill University, Montreal. Work here focused on optimising a high-throughput drug screening protocol utilising patient derived primary fibroblasts cultured in a 3D manner.
Aquaporin water channel role in oxidative stress, with primary emphasis on neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders.
McGill University, Montreal, Canada
Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2024)
Utilized patient derived fibroblast primary cells cultured in 3D for drug discovery. Area of focus was on Scleroderma.
University of Adelaide, Adelaide, Australia
PhD candidate/ Honours supervisor
Investigated the expression and role of aquaporin water channels in neuroglial cells under cellular stress. Primary area of research was on Alzheimer's Disease and tauopathies.
