Excellence in Research Impact

Prize

Description

Western-led research by Professor Mark Tjoelker and Dr Manuel Esperon-Rodriguez has advanced urban trees as a sustainable, nature-based solution for mitigating climate change impacts. The team’s research catalysed the adoption of a new national standard for nursery tree production and new tools that enhance tree quality and climate resilience. The team’s novel method for climate risk assessment of urban trees spanned 164 cities across 78 countries, increasing worldwide awareness and adoption of climate resilience planning in urban forestry. For outstanding impact, team members won the 2019 Award of Merit from the Australian Institute of Horticulture and Western’s 2023 Research Impact Competition.
