    Abstract

ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"Non-interrogative constituent + particle ne?ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ is a form of ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"thematic questionââ"šÂ¬Ã‚Â, where the particle ne functions as both a theme marker and a marker for discourse continuation. It marks what precedes it as a new theme, and invites the hearer to provide an appropriate rheme for it according to the preceding discourse or situation. The interrogative mode in this form is expressed by intonation or context. The form of ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"thematic questionââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ in Chinese reflects the pragmatic orientation of the language. It has unique discourse functions and should be considered as an independent type of interrogative sentence.
