Abstract
Joyce Carol Oates, one of the most famous contemporary novelists in America, is well-known for her prolificacy and writing of violence. This paper probes the influence of Oates's childhood experience on her such writing indulgence from the perspective of tragedy and analyzes her violence writing from two levels of tragedy. This paper concludes that Oates's interest in violence reflects her concern of the tragic existence of mankind, her eulogy of passion and human nature and her hope for a better future.
