Abstract
The earth is exposed to a great variety of natural disasters over many years depending on human activities and different methods of use. Land cover change emerges as a consequence of land use. One of the most important examples of land use is mining. Mining is the extraction of minerals and elements of economic value from different depths of the earth's crust. Today's underground and aboveground mining activities greatly influence the ecological balance of mining areas and their surroundings; For example, significant changes in the soil profile result in many negative environmental effects such as water flow change, soil erosion, and plant cover change, and even permanent damage is caused if toxic mineral wastes are not controlled from mining operations. With remote sensing and effective image processing methods in space technology, the change in land use today can be detected quickly, accurately and economically. In order to determine the environmental impact, such data provide fast and economical solutions for the determination of the physical effects of mining activities (infrastructure, mining, sedimentation etc.), as well as for determining migration and settlement dynamics and impacts, especially when used in conjunction with other relevant data sources. The aim of this study is to analyze the change of land cover and the environmental effects of the gold mining activities carried out in the Çukuralan district located between the districts of Ayvalık and Dikili in the north of İzmir Province. For this purpose, the change detection process between 2009 and 2017 years has been evaluated by analyzing multi-temporal satellite images. In this study by using Landsat 5 TM (2009), Landsat 8 OLI (2017) and Sentinel 2A (2017) data, the preprocessing step was applied to all dataset. Then, two different classification methods (Maximum Likelihood and Support Vector Machine) was employed and the changes were analyzed with the produced temporal thematic maps. Finally, the effectiveness of the two satellite data used in the thematic mapping and the environmental impacts were evaluated.
