Abstract
The paper manages to portrait the primary characteristics of the European union movements by: (1) describing the union density, the union structure of several major union movements in Europe; and (2) the diversity of these movements and their origins. The research argues that when facing the challenges posed by economic globalization, the union’s capacity to adapt to these challenges become vital for their survival and renewal. In the meantime, the union density faces a sharp decline in many of these nations. Nonetheless, the decline does not necessarily indicate a corresponding drop of union influence in politics, economy, and social life. In some of the investigated countries, due to particular special institutional arrangements, the unions are still capable to cater for the interests of labourers despite their declined membership.
