    Abstract

According to general metaphorical cognitive theories, the process of metaphorical interpretation is conceived as the mapping from the source domain to the target domain. It is believed by the authors that this mapping process by no means occurs in a “vacuum” condition, but is affected by both agentive and contextual factors. The agentive factors of metaphorical cognition mainly refer to the interpreter’s familiarity with the metaphor, and his/her knowledge background while the contextual factors chiefly refer to the textual context, situational context and cultural context of the metaphor. These factors are indispensable, interrelated to the agent’s process of metaphorical cognition.
