Abstract
In this article, we first take a look at four perspectives, namely the state, the society, teachers and students, while conducting an overall needs analysis for a new set of college English textbooks. We reflect that recent analyses like this are many and too general in nature and they often don’t get at the true needs of the textbook users. Textbooks thus developed,it is argued, often cannot break away from pre-existing models. It is pointed out that any new set of textbooks compiled for this generation of students must learn from successful experiences from both home and abroad, and stay focused on the real needs of the actual learners in the classroom. To help cultivate college English learners’ practical competence,it is perhaps important to start reforming the present teaching model and any new set of textbooks should go hand in hand with such reformation.
