    Abstract

There are many different English-Chinese editions of Hong lou meng (The Dream of Red Mansions) and three of them are full translated editions. Due to these different translated editions, the current research on Hong lou meng faces two challenges with one of them being the development of new research focus and the other being the comparability of the comparative studies of the different editions. The Chinese-English bilingual edition of Hong lou meng published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Publisher in 2012 restored the original text translated by David Hawkes and presented a full version with annotations that make the text faithful to the source Chinese classic. The Chinese-English bilingual edition has provided a reliable text material for both English-Chinese and Chinese-English translation research and has helped break through the bottleneck of comparative study of Hong lou meng.
