Abstract

Vincent Buckley has exerted a profound influence in Australia with his poems and poetic theory being the center of scholars’ discussion. In his poems and poetic practice, he holds on textual ontology, opposing any standard beyond literature. Therefore, he holds a negative attitude toward Arnold’s standard of morality, Eliot’s standard of religion and Australian nationalists’ standard of nation. In rejecting these standards, Buckley makes clear relationship among poem, morality, religion and nation, establishing his metaphysical poetic theory of textual ontology.
