Short Tracks - CD of 36 tracks – 30 played by Diana Blom – commercially released CD recording
Published by Wirripang Media, Pty. Ltd. Wirr 113
Research background (field, context, research question)
The standard CD length of around 70 minutes usually contains around 20 tracks in popular music and at times as few as three tracks of classical music. Short Tracks deliberately chose to feature 36 tracks of 4 minutes or less in length, some as short as one minute, and many works are for solo piano.
Research contribution (innovation, new knowledge)
This collection of short classical pieces for solo or small chamber instrumentation features music of Australian and international composers, performed and recorded by Australian and Italian performers and sound engineers. The performances by Diana Blom, on 30 of the 36 tracks, cover a range of keyboard styles from solo piano one hand, two hands, with flute, toy piano with music box player, and toy piano with pre-recorded Javanese saron, showing the versatility of the player.
Research significance (evidence of excellence)
The CD Short Tracks is released on Wirripang Media Pty. Ltd. and a research paper by Blom, Encarnacao, who played on one track, and Burgess, sound engineer and composer of one track, was presented at the Musicological Society of Australia conference in 2022 on the topic of the thinking behind sequencing the 36 tracks for a CD.
