    Abstract

The 'jeitinho' (pronounced jaytcheenyoo) is a social mechanism widely used in Brazilian society as a problem solving strategy. It entails bending or breaking rules in order to deal with difficult situations that emerge in the quotidian of Brazilian society. Based on qualitative study carried out in Brazil, this paper explores the different meanings attributed to the 'jeitinho', which at times is constructed negatively, at times positively, and at times both positively and negatively.
