A library catalogue system using soundex retrieval

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperConference Paperpeer-review

Abstract

Soundexing is a hashing system for English words. The algorithm of such a hashing system converts words into their phonetic versions. The soundexing techniques, while widely used for information retrieving in census systems, can be applied in library catalogue systems for error tolerance. With the support of an appropriately developed soundex algorithm, a catalogue system can largely increase its recall while not reducing precision. In this paper, the authors present a novel library catalogue system embedded with the proposed soundex algorithm. The proposed catalogue system is proved to be a promising one by comparing with traditional catalogue systems.
