    Abstract

Soundexing is a hashing system for English words. The algorithm of such a hashing system converts words into their phonetic versions. The soundexing techniques, while has been widely used for information retrieving in census systems, can be applied in library catalogue systems for error tolerance. With the support of an appropriately developed soundex algorithm, a catalogue system can largely increase its recall and in the meanwhile does not reduce the search precision. In this paper, the authors presented a novel library catalogue system embedded with the proposed soundex algorithm. To verify the proposed design, the performance of the developed catalogue system was compared with that of its traditional counterparts.
