    Abstract

It is because of my mother that I am a feminist, as well as a professor of feminist philosophy and gender studies. My mother was a social activist, and her passionate critiques of racism, class oppression, and other forms of social injustice laid the foundation for my own political and professional work. Her support and encouragement for my curiosity and independence enabled me to pursue these ideas in my own way. And, just as importantly, this subversive mother of five children also taught me how to be a mother.
