Abstract

This paper provides a review of current initiatives in providing alternative user interfaces for virtual worlds such as Second Life. These initiatives address various accessibility issues as for the visual, hearing and motion impaired rather than for the intellectual or cognitive special needs communities. These initiatives cover the use of variable sound for 3D simulation, haptic devices and have the potential to provide enhanced social interactions for both the general and the special needs communities.
