    Abstract

![CDATA[Mechatronics Design aims to synthesise technical information in the Mechantronics Curriculum into a physical product. In this manner it could be viewed as the litmus test of professionalism senior students are expected to display upon impending graduation. The course is spread over one semester period and initially provides an introductory component focused on machine elements, their selection, purpose and function. The second part looks at the combination of the machine elements with the driving and control function to provide the desired performance. Importance of optimization is stressed, the cost effectiveness and manner of manufacture being the two overriding factors. The novel feature of this course consists in strong involvement of industry in all phases of product realization where students tackle the project as a team under the external supervision of a senior engineer and overall guidance of the academic in charge. It is the aim of this paper to describe the mechanism of the subject delivery and the anner in which the important role of industry participation in the education of the future professionals can be realised. Mechatronics Design is seen as the window to Professional Practice on one hand and on the other as a potential source of future engineers to the participating industry partner. The supporting role of Government at all levels is also acknowledged.]]
