Abstract

Background: Developing innovative technological approaches that assist students in their learning and encourage the appropriate application of theoretical concepts is a challenge for nurse educators. There is increasing support with the expansion of technology to utilise teaching support mechanisms such as video to enhance the student learning environment. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of the use of one-way video as a learning approach in nursing education. Design and Data Source: This review consisted of multiple literature searches from five databases, namely Scopus, ProQuest, PUBMED, Medline, and Science Direct. Method: The literature search utilised a multi-method approach and incorporated twenty studies. Results: There is support for the inclusion of technology and innovative teaching methods to be incorporated into the nursing curriculum as a method of information dissemination and support. The evidence discusses the best methods available to implement video learning strategies as through the use of a hybrid teaching model. Conclusion: There is continued support for hybrid pedagogical models that combine the use of innovative teaching technologies such as video streaming with traditional methods such as face to face lectures. It is important for the nurse academic/educator to access and utilise effective and innovative teaching methods that complement the student learning experience. These may differ from well-established teaching models nevertheless teaching modalities need to cater to diverse multigenerational nursing student cohorts and complement their current learning support tools and learning styles. The use of video as a learning tool if effectively implemented can provide students with an alternative option of learning support.
