Abstract

The article discusses how the rabbit industry became an economic powerhouse in rural Australia from 1870 to 1950. Topics covered include the reported rabbit plague in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia, a brief history on the arrival of rabbits in Australia, and details relating to the growth of the rabbit industry in Australia. It also discusses how the rabbit industry became the largest employer in several rural towns in Australia in the 1890s.
