Abstract

Four x 2 year old Macaqua fasicularis monkeys (all males, siblings) were observed by continuous sampling techniques in an animal house for 30 minutes during which time the enclosure was entered and objects left to arouse the animals curiosity. Their most common behaviours were classified into the four main categories of location, facial expressions, play and inquisitive behaviour. A transition matrix was prepared from the data and a behavioural ethogram constructed. From this ethogram, it was found that the most common behaviour displayed by these monkeys was ‘location’—which occurred 32 times during the 30 minute duration of these observations. The least common displayed behaviour was play—which was observed 12 times. Observations were also made using time-sampling, techniques (of the same duration), while different types of food were introduced into the animal’s enclosure; a frequency histogram was constructed. The most common behaviour displayed under these conditions was ‘inquisitive behaviour’, observed 13 times, while the least common was play—3 times.
