Abstract

Participation in the higher levels of senior secondary school mathematics courses has fallen alarmingly in Australia over the past twenty years resulting in many students enrolling in degrees for which they are mathematically under-prepared. Students who do so are at risk of failing their university mathematics and statistics units. In this paper we discuss how student support in mathematics is provided in two large but very different universities in Sydney, Australia and the various measures we use to assess the success of the mathematics support provided.
