Abstract

Growing up I remember visiting other people’s houses with my mum and siblings to play with my friends and having a ball. It was the highlight of my pre-schooling social calendar. There were kids to play with, cakes and slices galore to eat and a relaxed vibe in the air. At the time, it was just what we did. It was normal and something to look forward to every few weeks. Looking back, I now know that these social occasions were in fact Nursing Mothers’ Association of Australia (NMAA) meetings; in the days when group meetings were held in members’ lounge rooms and counsellor and community educator training progress was referred to by the colour of the paper on which the assignments were printed.
