Adrian Snodgrass’s life of learning

This paper provides a brief account of the life of Adrian Snodgrass with the aim of contextualising the episodes discussed in the papers in this volume, filling in some of the gaps, and documenting the fundamental unity of his work across the apparently disparate fields of architecture, Buddhist philosophy, Buddhist art, and hermeneutical philosophy. It draws on sources from the family archive: from Adrian’s writings, published and not, old passports and travel ephemera, photographs, letters, interviews, conversations, and inevitably, my memory of the sixty years that we were together. The evidence from the former guides the latter.
