Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic airway disease. It is characterized by severe inflammation mediated by inflammatory cells such as macrophages, neutrophil influx, emphysema due to loss of alveolar-capillary units and poorly reversible impairment in lung function. The primary risk factor for COPD is cigarette smoking.
