Abstract

Microalgae are a potential renewable source that can contribute to sustainable development to provide and design a sustainable living environment for modern society. However, although these biofactories hold great promise for sustainable production, the transition of technological maturity as well as its consolidation on an industrial scale presents numerous challenges that still need to be overcome. Thus, a promising strategy that can serve as a springboard to leverage its advancement is the use of innovative technologies, such as the use of resources linked to information technology. In view of this, this chapter aims to emphasize the advancement of microalgal biotechnology in environmental management through the incorporation of technological innovations such as artificial intelligence. In addition, the main challenges inherent in its consolidation process towards a greener industry were examined, as well as competition with other sources of food additives, social acceptance, cost viability, environmental compensation, safety, and compatibility.
