Abstract
The article focuses on the political history of Australia. On November 6, 1999, about 55 percent of Australians voted against becoming a republic. Nobody argued for a republic more passionately than statesman Dr. John Dunmore Lang. In 1849 he sent an open letter to the Colonial Office. The leaders of the Anti-Transportation League, Australia's first pan-colonial body made frequent allusions to the American Revolution and it used the creation of an Australian republic.
