Abstract

Balance training has been named by different terms. The research goal was to analyze the types of exercises related to those terms. Original Scopus database papers, in English or Portuguese, published until 2013 were included. The terms of interest should be on title or within the paper keywords. The most frequent term was Balance training/ exercise (50%), followed by Functional training/ exercise (24%), Neuromuscular training/exercise (16%), Sensorimotor training/exercise (8%) and proprioceptive training/ exercise (6%). Those terms were used as synonyms, sometimes referring to the postural control training, another times referring to exercises far from this goal. The variety of exercises encompassed by each term was enormous. There is a need for a broad conceptual debate.
